Monthly Menus

Normally we plan our menus by the week. I kind of started dreading that task every week. I was having a hard time remembering what we had recently had to eat, to make sure we were varying up our recipes a bit (though, I guess we pretty much live on chicken around here). Plus, every week I felt like I couldn't come up with any foods we liked.

So, one day on the drive to Des Moines, I decided Jesse and I would make a list of foods we liked that we could choose from. Then, when we got home, I printed off my Google calendar for a few weeks and started making a menu out for what turned out to be the next 5 weeks.

To make it a little easier to plan out the weeks, I decided to try to make few 'key' items each week.
- Try a new food we've found in either magazines, blogs, or Pinterest
- Pizza --this is a staple in our house, you can make a bunch of different kinds so it's not the same each week (lately we've been grilling pizza = yum yum)
- Use a crock pot meal that we have down in the freezer
- Leftovers
- Date Night out

After using each of these categories each week, it got to be pretty easy to throw together the 5 weeks of a menu. Of course, this is just a plan, and I knew we weren't going to stick to it hardcore. Things come up, we crave a different type of food and so on.

So, when I look at the menu plan to see what groceries we need to be getting for the upcoming week, I go back and circle the meals we didn't eat and move them to the next weeks menu. I figure we already have that food on hand, so better use it, and just kind of shift all the rest of the meals back farther (who knows this could end up being a 6 or 7 week meal plan by constantly pushing food back!).

And of course I have to use our chalkboard refrigerator, so I make sure to write up the next weeks meals!

Harry Potter Love

That's right. I love Harry Potter! You know what that means? Midnight showing of the final movie in the series! It was spectacular. We watched all seven of the prior movies the week leading up to the midnight showing.

We started off watching Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone and snacking on pretzel wands. The plan was to have a Harry Potter themed snack for each of the movies...well that didn't exactly happen. But we did have many snacks to take into the theater to nibble on while waiting for the movie! Please excuse the not-so-greatness of the following photos...I was so excited about the snacks that I only snapped a few quick shots.

To start off, we had more pretzel wands.
Pretty simple to make: Melt almond bark and dip pretzel wands into it, dash some sprinkles on a few of the wands and you are good to go!

Gotta have some licorice wands, too!
Again, super easy to make, just like the pretzel wands except with licorice!

Up next, pumpkin pasties!
These were great. You can find the recipe here. Next time I'll cook them a bit longer in the last step. These will be a perfect treat come fall.

Can't have Harry Potter treats without chocolate frogs!
Get yourself a nice little frog shaped candy tray, melt some chocolate and let them cool! Wahoo!

Of course we made some butterbeer as well, but sadly no pictures of that scrumptious stuff. I dream of someday having a Harry Potter themed party. It will be full of Harry Potter-ish snacks, foods, and drinks. I can picture it with all kinds of HP decorations! Oh the dreams of some day...

When we first got to the theater, they were a bit confused and were handing us 3D glasses as we entered even though ours wasn't in 3D. They of course figured it out before the showing, but check out those special  Harry Potter shaped 3D glasses!

Pretzel Wands

Lumos!

Anyone else excited for Harry Potter and the Deathly Hollows Part 2?! I sure am! Last week we started our Potter-a-thon to watch all 7 movies leading up to the last one. To celebrate, I made Pretzel Wands. Super easy and simple to make, not to mention yummy.

Melt down almond bark.
Dip pretzel wand in almond bark.
Add sprinkles on some of the wands.
Let almond bark harden.
Enjoy!

Jess came over and cast a few spells on Jesse.

Four of us have tickets to the midnight showing and will be in line early to make sure we get good seats. While we are waiting in line we will be enjoying more pretzel wands along with licorice wands, homemade butterbeer, chocolate frogs, and pumpkin pasties!

Next week I hope to have a post showing all of our yummy treats!

Semi Bread Failure and a Few More Crafts

A co-worker of mine let me borrow a ginormous bread machine book a few days ago. Last night Jesse and I finally selected our first one to try: Cinnamon Swirl

Jesse took on the tremendously important task of adding the cinnamon and sugar section and rolling up the dough. It looked fantastic and we let it rise more before baking. It baked up and smelled delicious. We pulled it out of the oven, and it looked great, too!

Then we tried to get it out of the pan to cool. This is what we ended up with:

Yup, it came out in about three pieces. The good thing is that it still tastes yummy!! :)

The rest of my evening was filled with making some hair accessories to send to my nieces.....now hopefully Jesse got them in the mail today so they'll be getting them soon.
